About Me

I’m an optical engineer with a practical hands-on approach. I’ve worked in applied optics for a long time, in industry, in academic environments, and at several major astronomical observatories. My work experience includes: equipment design, fabrication, integration, calibration, and documentation. My areas of expertise are creating new instrumentation for large telescopes, optics manufacturing, and optical alignment and tooling.

I now own a company called Distasio Optical Documentation. We provide website content management as well as general technical writing for optical manufacturers, retailers, and equipment. I’m currently writing a non-fiction book and also developing new optical tooling. My physical residence is the state of Arizona in the USA.

Some of my experience grew out of measuring light in the lab, or with instruments on the telescope. I’ve also done calibration of electro-optical equipment and designed new methods of calibrating instruments for optical alignment and angular measurements. My electro-optics experience included TV camera sensors, CCD arrays, silicon diodes, photomultiplier tubes, and image intensifiers.

I’ve had the good fortune to work along side many excellent scientists and engineers in both academia and industry, and have learned a lot from them.  I have written, shot, and edited video productions for training and documentation in applied optics, manufacturing, metrology, and optical alignment. Video documentation has become a special part of my work, and I truly love doing it.

This little blog is proudly made in the USA.  I was fortunate to be born in the USA, the greatest country on this little planet. I also recognize that great talent and creativity come from everywhere on this planet. I believe as history shows, that immigration to the USA is a good thing, and that immigrants have contributed a great deal of talent, wisdom, and creativity to our country. My grandparents were immigrants and I am proud of their success.

I hope more American industries will invest in our inherent talent. We have plenty of brains and creativity right here in America. We should embrace the commitment to do good work, whatever work we choose to do. Our goal for success ought to be improving life for everyone.
